With Mitt Romney now presumptive Republican nominee for the presidential elections in 2012, Maven, the Global Knowledge Market, announced results of its latest presidential election tracking survey. The results show the power of incumbency weigh heavily in Obama? Benefit.
National polls released last week show that Obama and Romney almost dead even. However, Maven? The fifth survey of political insiders shows Barack Obama has an advantage, beating Romney by almost 40 percent of the issue that is likely to win in November.
The survey Maven, 69 percent of respondents believe that Barack Obama will win reelection in November 2012, up from 60 percent in the survey January and 48 percent in the survey of October. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney, who was neck and neck with Obama in October, fell 31 percent in the latest survey in April.
research? respondents included political consultants, lobbyists and government relations professionals from Maven? microconsulting extensive network.
? Perhaps the most interesting outcome of this month? survey is the fact that slightly more than half of all respondents indicated that they voted for John McCain in 2008? and almost half of them believe that Obama will win this year? Maven commented co-founder and CEO Wyatt Nordstrom. In other words, Republican insiders seem to believe that Romney will lose. Whether this is due to lingering sour grapes over their preferred Republican candidates? Romney lost the primary or a true indication of serious doubt on Romney? ability to confront Obama remains to be seen.?
As in previous studies, participants were asked to comment on the reasons for their selections. Highlights include:
Respondents cite the power of the incumbent as the main reason Obama will be reelected in 2012. One respondent summed up as follows:?
Obama enjoys benefits from the government. He has no significant opposition in the nomination of his party, and is therefore able to raise money for use in the general election rather than against primary opponents. Even with the nomination of the Republican party effectively decided that the party has not yet coalesced around their candidate, and is unlikely to really do it before the fall.?
Another respondent adds:
power of incumbency carries percentage points – maybe 5 – advantage almost by default. If oil prices go down, economic trends continue to improve, and more soldiers return home, this is almost a lock. The presumed cause did not bring enough enthusiasm, especially from the most conservative blocks, to sway enough voters to create anxiety in 2012 barring unforeseen changes.?
additional factor? Obama? Is fundraising skills? was cited as a reason for the victory of Obama, according to political Mavens surveyed. A Maven said it this way:?
believe Obama has enough money advantage and will once again show his skill as a good fighter to win reelection. I feel the Republican candidate will demonstrate an appeal to overcome Obama? Mystic.?
Another respondent adds:
? Obama will probably win the popular and delegate votes. He spends much time and money to campaign and most of his base will vote the same way.?
On the contrary, others predict that Romney will win the general election because of slow economic and other domestic issues. As one respondent stated:?
current economic situation and lack of recovery will deny the popularity of President Obama? Romney has more concise energy plan. He understands that we need to develop a comprehensive energy policy?
Another said:
? economic recovery will remain weak through the fall. Many independent voters are looking for an alternative to President Obama and will support the cause if they can be confident that he can meet with primary jurisdiction threshold.?
This is the fifth in a series of surveys conducted by Maven led to the November 2012 elections. The results follow to illustrate how the mood in the respondent population change as events unfold.
